Corum HistoryFounded by Bannwart & Simone Ries only in 1956 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland has established a world-wide reputation for highly imaginative wristwatches. Corum was initially known as Quorum.Rene Bannwart and his cousin Simone Ries started the company with her father Gaston, who had been operating a small watch company in La Chaux-de-Fonds since 1924. Now, more than 45 years after the founder's dream gave rise to the venerable Corum name, another watch industry visionary, Severin Wunderman, has taken the helm as the new owner of the company. A notable dial is the Météorite range (1987-8) featuring slices of the largest meteorites ever to fall to earth. Corum bought the 34 ton "Cape York" (in Greenland) to make only 999 dials. This year Corum produced the Golden Bridge. Piece 001 is offered to the Museum of La Chaux-de-Fonds Today, Corum can be justly proud of the fact that it has one of the richest collections in its field. Corum watches are immediately recognizable as such, and although a few of the movements are based on ebauches, these ebauches are often reworked by Corum's in-house watchmakers. A vast range of original designs, which with their infinite variety, define the Corum style - always in the forefront of time. From the "Golden Bridge" to the "Limelight", "Coin Watch", "Romulus" and "Admiral's Cup", Corum's products reveal a progressive attitude that is quite rare in today's watchmaking world. Rather than merely resting on its laurels, hoping to maintain the value of its tradition, at the cost of new ideas, Corum continually debuts new designs. Their attitude might best be summed up as follows: "To create is to construct, and to construct is to live". |
